KEY POINTS:
A man is under police guard in an Auckland hospital after a random slashing in Mangere.
It is alleged he had a dispute with family members this morning, before attacking an elderly couple with a knife in their home nearby.
The pair are in a serious but stable condition with head injuries in Middlemore Hospital.
Police communications manager Angeline Barlow says the man was also injured, but it is not known to what extent.
She says police remain at the scene in Wellesley Road, and are speaking to witnesses to try and work out what happened.
Two weapons have been recovered by police.
