SYDNEY - The son of a murdered New Zealand-born woman has been extradited from Queensland to Canberra, where police want to question him as part of their inquiry into her death.
Glen Porritt was arrested after a police officer stopped and questioned him in Surfers Paradise on Tuesday for riding a pushbike without a helmet.
Porritt was being sought by police after he failed to attend a directions hearing in May for an inquest into his mother's death.
Nanette "Sandy" Porritt, 50, was found dead in her Canberra home on December 21.
Police have not released the cause of her death, but the Daily Telegraph has reported she was stabbed more than 50 times.
Porritt, 22, has not been accused of his mother's murder, but police have said they want to speak to him about aspects of their inquiry.
He was missing for 10 weeks before being found yesterday.
The Canberra Times said today it understood he had been living in a car in the carpark of the Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club on the Gold Coast.
Queensland police officer Senior Constable Aaron Livingstone said he stopped and questioned Porritt near the main beach of Surfers Paradise about noon on Tuesday because he was riding a bike without a helmet.
Porritt allegedly gave a false name and was charged with contravening a direction by a police officer.
Mr Livingstone said Porritt attracted his attention in Surfers Paradise because he was unshaven and dishevelled, riding an old bike with no shoes and no helmet.
Detectives from Canberra flew to the Gold Coast on Tuesday night and last night accompanied a handcuffed Porritt back to Canberra.
