Waikato is planning in advance to address skills shortages in the region.
The Waikato Institute of Technology is working with industries to match employers' needs with training requirements to fill the jobs.
Spokeswoman Mary Jensen says there are some specialised areas with urgent skill shortages including the equine industry which is short of horse dentists.
Ms Jensen says there are also gaps in the hospitality sector with an acute shortage of chefs.
