Rainbow Ski Area in the Nelson Lakes district is to remain closed until it can make more snow, or more falls, a spokesman says.
Martin Hay said that despite a significant amount of snow six weeks ago, a spell of warm wet weather meant there was not enough snow to operate the field to a standard customers would want or expect.
While Rainbow did open last Saturday, Mr Hay said the field now had just a 10-25cm base with some bare patches of ground visible.
The warm weather was preventing the field making its own snow as sub-zero conditions were needed.
