A man who died in Havelock, between Nelson and Blenheim, last night after falling from his motorised skateboard has been named as Tom Kenny.
The 41-year-old man appeared to have lost control while skating down a hill and took a heavy blow to the head, a Fire Service spokesman said.
The accident happened about 8pm.
Havelock Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Stanford said Mr Kenny, originally from Porirua, had fallen after hitting dirt and flipping the skateboard.
"This flipped him onto the concrete and he hit the back of his head," Mr Stanford told the Marlborough Express.
Mr Kenny was not wearing a helmet or other protective clothing, Mr Stanford said.
