Sixty people were caught drink-driving during a police breath-testing blitz in Auckland at the weekend - and 10 of those drivers were under 20 years old.
Police breath-tested more than 14,500 drivers at the late evening-early morning checkpoints on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights that were placed around the city.
Auckland City road policing manager Inspector Gavin Macdonald said that although 60 offenders was still too many, it was pleasing to see a vast improvement from 2009 when 175 drivers were prosecuted during a similar campaign.
He said it was also a timely reminder to drivers under the age of 20 that the alcohol limit for them was now zero. This year, 10 vehicles were impounded, 28 people had their licences suspended, more than $7000 worth of fines was collected and 14 vehicles were seized by Ministry of Justice bailiffs.
A 28-year-old woman blew 960 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath which was nearly two and a half times the legal limit of 400. It was her first offence.
