Six youths arrested after police chase

Six youths, with the oldest aged 15, have been arrested after leading police on a half hour car chase through the Bay of Plenty tonight.

The incident that involved police from Whakatane and Tauranga, began about 7.20pm when the youths allegedly stole a Toyota Hilux and took it for a joyride through Kawerau and Edgecombe, police said.

The vehicle's tyres were spiked as it drove into Edgecombe, but continued with the left side tyres deflated.

Police spiked the wheels again as it approached Awakeri, 17km south west of Whakatane, which burst the rest of the tyres.

However, the driver continued driving on the vehicle's rims, refusing to stop, police said.

Police were able to box the vehicle in and all six youths were arrested.
