KEY POINTS:
A six-year-old girl is dead after a three-car pile-up at Richmond, south of Nelson, today.
Police said vehicles had slowed down behind a tractor, when three cars crashed nose to tail on the Appleby Highway near the intersection of McShane Road about 11.30am.
A six-year-old girl died at the scene and another person who had been in the same car was taken to hospital.
Police were still advising her next of kin.
Police closed the highway until about 3.30pm.
The three cars and tractor had been taken in for expert examination.
Nelson police wanted to speak to anyone who saw the crash, arrived soon after it or saw the tractor on the road at that time.
