Six-year-old girl dies after tree fall

A six-year-old girl is dead after falling from a tree in a park in Hawke's Bay.

The girl was playing with friends in Flaxmere's Lochain Park about 6.30pm yesterday when she fell from a bluegum tree.

She was climbing a 6m-long branch that broke at the tree's base and fell on her.

The branch pinned her to the ground for 15 minutes before she died, Senior Sergeant Greg Brown of Hastings police said.

Her friends ran for help and it took three adults to remove the branch, Mr Brown said.
