The Government yesterday named six companies shortlisted to supply a multi-role vessel and patrol boats for the Navy under the $500 million Project Protector.
Defence Minister Mark Burton said 21 organisations had registered an interest. The six chosen were: BAE systems (Britain), Blohm and Voss (Germany), DSA (Australia/Netherlands), Singapore Technologies Marine, Tenix Defence (Australia) and Vosper Thornycroft (Britain).
Mr Burton said five were already negotiating with New Zealand companies, and there was "a great opportunity" forlocal involvement.
The next phase would be responses from the shortlisted companies to detailed proposals for the ships, which would be issued early next year.
'I encourage New Zealand industry to further build contacts with the organisations shortlisted to ensure that they are fully aware of the world-class quality skills, equipment and services that New Zealand companies are able to provide," said the minister.
Mr Burton said the Ministry of Defence and Industry New Zealand would ensure the short-listed companies had a "thorough understanding" of New Zealand industries' capabilities.
