The Department of Conservation this week closed a 200m strip of land to the public so Solid Energy could carry on blasting at its Stockton open-cast coal mine without injuring protesters.
They have camped near the ridgeline in a bid to save a giant snail habitat.
If the protesters remained, police would need to act "in regard to trespass", said Mike Slater of DoC.
