Sisters Ana-May Playle and Janeen Bruce both scored splendid goals as Dalefield drew 2-2 with Victoria University in their Wellington premier division women's hockey match played at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
Playle's goal came from a reverse stick shot early in the second half and allowed Dalefield to draw level at 1-1 after they trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Bruce's goal came from a powerful shot along the backline and from an acute angle and gave Dalefield a 2-1 advantage before University struck back with a second goal of their own about 10 minutes from the
game's end.
The draw was a better result for Dalefield against University than the defeats they had suffered at their hands in the first two rounds but coach Nigel Goodin had somewhat mixed feelings over their display.
"We were pretty flat in the first half but got some momentum going in the second," he said. "Overall it wasn't too bad but it could have been better."
Both Playle and Bruce had impressive games up front for Dalefield while others to shine were goalkeeper Lianna Johnson, fullbacks Alice Davies and Kylie Smith and midfielder Norma Stein.
The Dalefield men's team lost 3-0 to Victoria University in their Wellington premier division match, also played in Wellington, but, from all accounts, it was a gutsy display by a side short on numbers and having the misfortune to lose their inspirational leader Rowan Yeon with a finger injury.
