Saving her sister's life was not the outcome Carolyn Smith expected when carrying out her first mole check.
Mrs Smith, a registered theatre nurse, had completed her certificate in dermoscopy and had asked sister Melanie Hawke to be her first patient for a trial mole check.
Mrs Hawke was happy to oblige and after putting it off a few times, headed to the Skinspots Skin Cancer Clinic in Mount Maunganui on March 6 to have her spots checked for signs of trouble.
"I had a mole on the back of my thigh that looked a bit weird to me but because I never really see it I just went about my business.
"Carolyn did my mole check then consulted with the doctor because it didn't look very good."
