On a bitterly cold Wellington day a band played on as our Governor-General for the past five years, Sir Anand Satyanand, is farewelled at Parliament.
There was a split decision over whether to continue the programme as scheduled on the Parliamentary forecourt or to move it indoors.
In the end they decided to go with the squalls of rain and sleet which saw a damp Sir Anand receiving the 21 gun salute from the far off Point Jerningham and then inspecting the military guard of honour.
Then it was inside to the State farewell luncheon for a man who has brought quiet dignity to the role of representing The Queen in this country.
Lieutenant-General Sir Jerry Mateparae will be sworn in, in the next two weeks.
