Simonsen's indoor bowls team prevail

The Wairarapa indoor bowls season is fast drawing to a close, with the fours championship held last Sunday.

The team of Elva Simonsen, Marilyn O'Neale, Tina Patrick and Steve Rowlett beat John Mahupuku, George Mahupuku, Jenny Mahupuku and Gwen Pocock 13-5.

After two ends, however, it was Mahupuku's team who was up 3-2 and after five ends they had increased their advantage to 5-2.

The sixth end saw Simonsen pick up a valuable four to put them ahead 6-5 and after the next two ends they were ahead 9-5.

The ninth end saw Mahupuku kill the end to give Simonsen a 12-5 lead and they managed one more shot to take the title.

Central club have completed their colts pairs, with Robbie Duncan and Jackie Whittington taking the honours from Steve Rowlett and Mike Towgood.

The champion of champion triples were held last Wednesday, with teams from Central Cossie, Lansdowne, Clareville and East taking part.

First round matches saw Central and East play, with the rest having byes. Central won that game to progress to the next round, where they beat Clareville in a match which went to an extra end, and Cossie beat Lansdowne.

The final was a close-fought affair with the Cossie team of Janice Leighton, Eddie Bannister and Ev Hollings securing a 10-8 win over the Central line-up of Sarndra Bain, Robbie Duncan and Tina Patrick.

Steve Rowlett of the Central club won Sunday's colt singles from Steve Clode of Dannevirke. Colts are players who have played indoor bowls for five years or less.
