KEY POINTS:
New Zealand Herald reporter Simon Collins has been awarded the prize for Excellence in Engineering Journalism.
Hot on the heels of his Qantas Media Award for social issues reporting, judges lauded his reporting of engineering industry standards.
"Readers are well served by Simon's thorough reporting," said Dr Grant Harris of Massey University. "Rather than taking each claim about structural engineering at face value, Simon undertook lengthy research to check out each claim, studying documents and interviewing a wide range of people in the industry."
Collins was nominated alongside Rod Vaughan of TV3's 60 Minutes programme, and Mike White of North & South magazine.
Engineers New Zealand said the award aimed to recognise the contribution of the media to the public's understanding of the engineering industry.
