National MP Clem Simich appears headed to the deputy speakership of the new Parliament after Labour announced it would support his bid.
Labour's backing is in the hope that National will support Margaret Wilson, the Speaker from the last Parliament.
A spokeswoman for Leader of the House Michael Cullen said he had been consulting other parties and he hoped that on the basis of Labour's support for Mr Simich National would support Ms Wilson.
But National shadow leader of the House Gerry Brownlee was making no such guarantee yesterday, accusing Labour of conducting itself arrogantly since the election.
Asked if National would support Ms Wilson, he said it was anticipated she would be elected unopposed meaning National's support would not be needed. "It won't be a case of having to support or it not. I suspect it will be just the one nomination."
But Mr Brownlee said National was "delighted" Mr Simich had Labour's support and it was enough to make him deputy Speaker.
Dr Cullen said Mr Simich had gained a reputation for impartiality.
The elections for the speakerships are on Monday.
Mr Simich would replace Labour's Ann Hartley, who was deputy Speaker in the last Parliament. Mrs Hartley and the other assistant Speaker from the last Parliament, Labour's Ross Robertson, would be nominated by Labour as assistant Speakers this term.
Next Tuesday is the state opening of Parliament, including the speech from the throne when the Governor-General outlines the new Government's programme. The first question-time will be next Thursday.
