Masterton's disability advocate Peter Knighton has been busy collecting more than 700 signatures over the past two weeks that will help bring a chair hoist to the Genesis Recreation Centre.
The chair hoist will give wheelchair-bound visitors more points of access to the pool which has a ramp and an aquatic wheelchair.
Mr Knighton says having the chair hoist will make disability access easier for patrons. "Basically what I was told ... is that all I need is 10 signatures of people in wheelchairs, motorised scooters or people who use crutches and then they'll look into getting a chair hoist at the pool. But what I want to do is also get the public's support because wheelchairs can happen to anyone."
Mr Knighton has gathered six signatures from wheelchair-bound members of the community, and more than 700 signatures. He has left the petitions at Masterton Fried Chicken, CCs, the $2 shop, and the police station's watch house.
Masterton District Council spokesman Sam Rossiter-Stead said council was looking into improving the town's facilities to make them more consumer-friendly.
