KEY POINTS:
Dunedin police have had a confirmed sighting of the armed and dangerous man they are hunting in relation to the killing of a woman in the city yesterday morning.
Vicki Jane Telfer, 25, was found stabbed to death at a house in the suburb of Caversham at about 2am.
Her sister Lisa Anne Telfer was at the house and escaped with cuts on her hands before raising the alarm. Witnesses said the slain woman had a toddler daughter.
Police named the man they were seeking as Shiloh Rickards, also known as Matthew Te Anini, a 46-year-old Maori.
Detective Inspector Ross Pinkham said Rickards visited an associate's address in the Wakari area of Dunedin yesterday afternoon and was last seen in the Gardens area of north Dunedin.
When last seen he was wearing a blue fairydown polar fleece top, a blue fleece beanie on top of another brown beanie, dark boots and trousers of an unknown colour.
Mr Pinkham said Rickards' appearance was distinctive with large tattoos on his foreheads with the words "Jesus Christ Said".
Police are urgently seeking sightings of Rickards via the 111 emergency line and warn members of the public not to approach him.
Police and forensic scientists from ESR in Christchurch were today continuing a scene examination in Edwin St.
Ms Telfer's body was removed from the scene late yesterday and a post mortem is planned for today.
