Dumpers warned of consequences if caught
"I live in a rural area, 20km from a small town, 40km from a larger one," writes a reader. "Our local community of farmers run regular road clean- up days where we get everything from the usual stuff that people biff from their windows on Sunday drives, to bags of household rubbish that people drive the 80km round trip to dump - rather than pay the $3 a bag tip fee in town. We check the bags for bills to identify them and pass on the details to the council which prosecutes. They also dump their cats with kittens and other unwanted livestock. We try to collect them and find them homes before they destroy the bird life. Woe betide anyone caught doing this - they'll likely find themselves trapped by a tractor and an angry farmer to boot!"
Driver sneers at blanket rule
A reader comments: "Regarding talking on a phone while driving. I've been doing it for 20 years (texting too) and never come close to an accident. That's because I am highly alert and have much higher hand to eye co-ordination than most people. You may not trust yourself doing it but I do. Treating everyone the same is stupid and a blanket rule like that is completely flawed. Similar to a drink driving limit, some people are impaired after one beer while others aren't affected until five or six. Saying we are all endangering others is not understanding humans and how different we all are."
