Remuera rejects riff-raff
Satirical Facebook page, Humans of Remuera, is closer to real life than you'd think. A reader from Remuera writes: "I hope Iain Valentine from the Remuera Residents Association has a good longthink about his comments on 3 News. He said that Halloween is not a 'welfare activity', that children should be trick-or-treating in their own neighbourhood and even explains how to keep non-resident children out of Remuera.
'We tend to say, 'We don't know where you come from. What school do you go to?' Because if it's not a local school then it's likely that they've come from outside, and if that's the case then we tend to say, 'I think you should go somewhere else'." This attitude is heartbreaking. They're just kids. But I know I'm wasting my breath, because I know many will agree with him. As the reporter said: "So while some Auckland residents like to be selective on Halloween, there are those who still like to light up a kid's smile no matter where they come from."
"A new American TV series titled Scorpion started last month on CBS," writes Steve. "Scorpion is an American drama loosely based on computer expert Walter O'Brien. In the first episode O'Brien must solve a terrorist act of stolen airport control software. The only solution is to retrieve a copy from an international incoming flight from New Zealand's 'Auckland Airlines'."
Green means go straight for car
As well as the calming red stripes there has also been some spending on an urban cycleway, writes Andrew Pacey. "Little green pathways, with arrows on them, enable the cyclists to move from the footpath to the road safely and vice versa. These snazzy little green pathways encourage cyclists to use the footpath at corners But the real genius of these little green pathways is that, where they join the footpath to the road: if a car is parked (legally), the cyclist is directed into the side of the car, as my 3-year-old daughter demonstrates."

Innovation: Drones are handy for breaching security at political event and taking real estate pictures, but now they have a more noble use. A recent engineering graduate in the Netherlands has developed a prototype emergency response done for cardiac arrest victims. It's light and can fly about 100km/hr per hour and had a defibrillator. The drone has a speaker, a microphone, and a camera so the operator can give instructions to the people on the scene, and see what's going on. And doesn't have to contend with traffic, so could theoretically reduce response times....
