"Travelling south along the Desert Road a week or so ago it was great fun to see families playing in the lush snow by the side of the road," writes David Winn. "Returning two days later - still plenty of snow - but not a kid in sight; the fun police had erected an illuminated sign proclaiming: "No stopping for next 25km".
South Korea gets revenge for racism
Two weeks ago, an Asiana airliner crashed in San Francisco. Local news station KTVU gave the flight crew fake and racist names. Three people were fired over the incident. Last week, a Southwest airliner crashed in New York City, with no fatalities. A South Korean TV newscast parody had a crack at the American station creating a graphic with American pilot names: "Captain Kent Parker Wright", "Co-Captain Wyatt Wooden Workman". They even went as far as making up fake names for people to interview. Flight instructor "Heywood U. Flye-Moore" and sceptical passenger "Macy Lawyers". (Source: Slothed.com)
Price to pay for idyllic island living
Regarding the high price of fuel on Waiheke, Charlie Telfer from Freight Lines writes: "Fuel tankers can only carry 26-29,000 litres cutting that profit margin right back. On the ferry they would only take up 4 to 5 car spaces but when loaded would equal the weight of 22 loaded station wagons going over for a long weekend. As weight would need to be managed I'm sure there's a price structure in place to charge accordingly. This coupled with turnover volumes, which must be small compared with most service stations in main centres across New Zealand. I think these stations are providing an invaluable service to the people of Waiheke and its visitors."
Rob wants his car back
Rob was woken up Monday 3.30am by the unmistakable sound of his V8 Hilux Surf being started outside his house in Herne Bay. "I ran outside in my undies in time to see someone driving it away. I jumped into my other car and spent an hour prowling the area but neither me or the police could find it. It is insured but I don't want the money, I just want my car back. $500 reward for info leading to its safe return (or donation to charity of choice). Please keep your eyes peeled around Auckland for a burgundy/grey Toyota Hilux Surf with black roof-rack, scratched front bumper and faded bonnet paint."
