One in 100,000 kidney call answered
Christine Royles of Maine was diagnosed with both lupus and ANCA vasculitis, auto-immune diseases that required the 24-year-old mother to endure 10 hours of dialysis daily. Royles joined the 100,000 names on the national kidney donor list but also decided to write this on her SUV: "Looking for someone 2 donate me their kidney! Must have type O blood. (You only need one kidney.) Call or Text." It was a long shot but Josh Dall-Leighton, a father of three children, two of whom have special needs, saw the message and after testing revealed that he was a "strong potential match" he agreed to the transplant. Open channel walkie-talkie
James from Mt Albert writes: "Nana in town, gives Ruby walkie-talkie set. Pick Rubes up from school, driving through Western Springs motorway rebuild. Suddenly walkie-talkie picks up local workmen on her channel. Ruby then clicks on and starts asking them all sorts from organising smoko to what jobs she could help them with. Nana and I laughing so hard there were tears!"
Starship forgets parent/caregiver at mealtime
A reader writes: "I see Starship Hospital is working with police and Child, Youth and Family to develop a "traffic light" system to guide referrals to CYF for "medical neglect" which would include obesity. I found this ironic given Starship only gives the patient a hospital meal, not the parent/caregiver staying with the sick child. Meaning they have to leave their sick wee ones to buy fast food, the nearest option, or eat the thin white toast provided. A system which hardly encourages good nutrition."
Telecom on-hold song easily changed
Tip of the day (from Mike): "Discovered this while on hold: did you know that if you press # when on hold for Telecom, it changes the song you are listening to? Great for those annoying ear-worms."
