Masterton people living in the Johnston St area may be wondering what is responsible for shrill, raucous calls that have permeated the neighbourhood since the start of January.
The culprits have now been uncovered - Mynah birds have made a rare appearance in Masterton and have taken up residence at the Masterton transfer station and landfill.
Masterton ornothologist Colin Scadden said it was very unusual to see Mynahs south of Napier.
Mynahs are from the same family as starlings but are larger and more aggressive with a shrill, raucous call and are considered pests in many communities.
They were introduced to New Zealand in the 1890s.
