KEY POINTS:
There's a little bit of a squeeze on with our high over the country today. A low developing in the sub-tropics (yes, another one ... but it looks smaller at this stage) is going to start feeding in an easterly breeze from Auckland northwards. Plenty of cloud and a few showers will annoy campers. As a camper myself I'd say the wind will probably be the most annoying feature.
In the far south low air pressure in the South Ocean will see nor'westers building. So we have easterlies blowing at the top of the high over Northland, calm winds/sea breezes in between and then nor'westers swinging back around in the Tasman and moving in over the far South.
Wet Weather:
Again another dry day for most. As I said above, showers across Northland - mostly eastern Northland - and maybe in Auckland too. A very light shower over Southland is also possible.
Hot spots:
With that easterly developing in the north it means some other regions may be in for the hot weather today. Likely contenders will be Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa. Alexandra and Queenstown.
Potential Severe Weather?
Nothing too concrete on the horizon but a low in the sub-tropics may bring in some rain early next week. If you're camping don't panic just yet ... most models aren't really agreeing much on the exact track but Northland and Coromandel may be most exposed.
Strong winds are likely to build over the South Island and Wellington on New Year's Eve ... again nothing too concrete just yet.
Next Update: Monday morning.
