Children were sleeping in the bedroom of a house when it was peppered by a shotgun blast, police said today.
Detective Sergeant Mike Sears said it appeared a pedestrian fired a shot on a street corner in Naenae,Lower Hutt, early on Saturday morning, hitting a moving vehicle, along with a parked car and the bedroom where children were sleeping.
Mr Sears said police had located the intended target of the shot -- a red sports car -- but were unable to track down the owner.
"We don't know who fired that shot, why the car was in the street or who was driving it," he said.
"We also don't know if the occupants were injured or not."
Mr Sears said police needed help from the public and would treat any information received in confidence.
