The man shot by police in Auckland on Monday was charged with two offences at a court bedside hearing in Auckland City Hospital last night.
Actor Robert Mokaraka, 36, was shot in the chest after allegedly threatening police with what they said appeared to be a firearm, outside a house in Pt Chevalier.
A police statement last night said charges of possession of an offensive weapon and assault with a weapon were laid during the Auckland District Court hearing in the hospital.
Mokaraka was remanded on bail to appear in court on August 19.
Investigation head Detective Superintendent Rod Drew said earlier yesterday that a police officer fired one shot when Mokaraka refused to stop after advancing into the street and threatening police, with what appeared to be a firearm wrapped in a towel.
A flatmate of Mokaraka doubts he intended to hurt anyone - having armed himself with the "bluntest thing in the house" - but is shocked he allegedly engineered his own shooting.
Linda Turner said she "did sort of wonder" why he had a meat cleaver in the stand-off. "You couldn't even chop veggies with that thing."
Police communications centre phone logs appear to show Mokaraka tried to set up his own death.
He enticed police to his home with false reports of a violent domestic incident involving a man armed with a concealed weapon, said Detective Superintendent Rod Drew.
"It is now apparent that, having given a distinctive description of the 'angry man' he said was armed with a concealed firearm, the man dressed himself to fit the description and waited for police to arrive."
