A man has been remanded in custody for the Christmas-New Year holiday break after being charged with thousands of dollars worth of shoplifting - including almost $1300 worth of goods in one trip to a Napier supermarket.
Jamie Russell Waapu, 35, of Hastings, did not seek bail when he appeared before a Justice of the Peace in Napier District Court on Friday.
Duty solicitor James Rainger said Waapu already had other ``active'' shoplifting charges before the courts and consented to a remand in custody to January 4.
Waapu faces six charges.
He was apprehended after an incident at The Warehouse in Napier on Thursday, in which goods worth $629.70 were allegedly taken.
Another charge involves goods worth $1296.98 taken from Pak `n Save in Napier on November 14, and others allege the taking of about $1250 worth of manchester items from The Warehouse on November 18, another $1200 of various items from the store the next day, and two raids on December 5, one with $1220.99 worth of electrical items and the other with mixed items valued at $629.70.
