KEY POINTS:
Jules knew she was buying a pup ... she just thought it was a miniature pup.
But Lola, her new cavoodle (King Charles Cavalier spaniel crossed with a miniature poodle), kept growing. That's because she comes from a standard poodle cross, not a miniature.
"She weighs about 10 kilos and is about the size of a small collie," said Jules, who wouldn't give her surname.
When Jules complained to Animates Kaiwharawhara, in Wellington, which sold her Lola for $1595, it acknowledged it had made a mistake and had sold her a standard poodle-cross rather than a miniature-cross.
She had bonded with Lola and wanted to keep her, but her dog bills had escalated, with Lola outgrowing all her equipment.
She was told she could keep Lola and accept $1000, or nothing.
That later rose to $5000 in Animates vouchers, and when Consumer magazine intervened the offer improved further.
The parties settled at the weekend, with both saying the terms were confidential.
