Police are hunting a man who bashed the sole staff member of a Hastings dairy with an iron bar in a failed robbery bid.
Detective Glenn Restieaux said the man entered the Jano dairy on Oliphant Road at about 6.40pm on Friday, as the assistant was closing up.
He struck the assistant once with an iron bar, then demanded money, but was disturbed by a vehicle that pulled up fleeing empty-handed on a bicycle.
Mr Restieaux said the offender was described as a solidly built Maori man, about 35 years old with short black hair,
The assistant received a cut to his head which required medical attention.
