Kiwi-born, Australian broadcaster Derryn Hinch says articles he published on his website naming sex offenders did not identify them.
Hinch is charged with five counts of breaching suppression orders by naming two sex offenders on his website and at a 2008 rally on the steps of Parliament House.
His barrister David Gilbertson said today that Hinch named the sex offenders on his website but the information he provided would not enable them to be identified.
To identify the persons a member of the public would need more information, he told the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
Mr Gilbertson said dozens of people had the same name as one of the men Hinch named.
Hinch, who has cancer and is awaiting a liver transplant, told reporters on Wednesday he may only have two to three months to live.
If Hinch is found guilty, prosecutors have agreed to adjourn sentencing for two months, to give him time to receive a life-saving transplant.
The hearing before Melbourne Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg is continuing.
