Maritime Safety Authority officials are investigating a collision between a container ship and a fishing vessel off D'Urville Island.
At 8.30am on Friday, Nelson-based fishing vessel Mako collided with the Malaysian container ship Bunga Teratai 4, authority spokeswoman Helen Mojel said.
There were no reported injuries.
The Mako was yesterday moored at Port Nelson, and the Bunga Teratai 4 moored in Auckland.
Investigators were speaking with both skippers to establish what happened and whether prosecutions were likely to follow, she said.
