Shield fever struck Wairarapa-Bush Junior Advisory Board
rugby grand-finals day on Saturday.
Up for grabs in three of the divisions were shields donated by
Eketahuna identity Brent Dickson with the express purpose of
adding something special to the occasion.
And that it certainly did with the winning sides showing the
same excitement as those adult players lucky enough to get their
hands on that most famous ``log of wood'', the Ranfurly Shield.
``The kids just loved it, they were all touching and kissing the
shield as if it was the greatest thing on earth,'' said Masterton Red Star coach Peter Semmens, whose Rams White under-11s beat
Marist 22-10. Rams also won the under-13 title with a 29-0 defeat of
a Combined side of mainly Gladstone, Marist and East Coast
players, while Greytown Red under-10s beat Gladstone 15-10.
