A 6m-high, 1.2km-long acoustic fence could be built beside the Waitaki River town of Kurow, in North Otago, to make life bearable for residents during construction of the proposed $1.2 billion Project Aqua power scheme.
Initially, Meridian Energy proposed residents in up to 58 houses next to the intake construction zone would have to be relocated, either temporarily or permanently. Because residents wanted to stay, Meridian suggested the fence.
Meridian spokesman Alan Seay said initial feedback from residents was positive. The fence could be made a community feature, displaying local artwork.
