Firefighters battled a blaze at a Shell New Zealand manufacturing plant in Lower Hutt today.
The chemical fire started beneath a vat, used for melting sulphur, about 12pm, fire communications acting shift manager Belinda Beets said.
The area on Gracefield Rd was evacuated while seven fire crews fought the fire.
It took about three hours to bring under control, she said.
The plant mainly manufactures detergents and other chemicals.
