KEY POINTS:
Shell, BP, Gull and Caltex have dropped their diesel prices at the pump by five cents a litre today.
Shell spokeswoman Kylie Reeves said the price fall was due to a decrease in the international price of the product.
"We have not seen the same drop for petrol prices. Where the refined diesel price has fallen by 5 per cent over the last week, the cost for refined petrol has actually increased by 10 per cent," Ms Reeves said
BP spokesman Neil Green said the fall comes on the back of a strengthening New Zealand Dollar and a weakening refined fuel price.
He said the reason petrol prices had not moved as well was because the two fuel prices are not linked.
"When you go back a month, you'll see the refined price of petrol and motor spirits got passed on more than diesel. We're just going through a process of where diesel is catching up," Mr Green said.
Gull retail business manager Graham Stirk said Gull was also in the process of moving after the international diesel price fell overnight.
Caltex spokeswoman Sharon Buckland said petrol and diesel had not moved together for about a year on the Singapore market where New Zealand companies buy their fuel.
Mobil have so far not returned phone calls.
