Teen student Christie Marceau tried to escape an attack at her Auckland home by running outside - but seconds later she was dead.

And her distraught mother and grandmother were at the house, according to a source.

Police responding to an urgent 111 call found Christie's body at her home on Auckland's North Shore at 7.15am on Monday.

They also found a bloodstained knife.

Akshay Anand Chand, who turns 19 tomorrow, was also at the property and was later arrested and charged with killing Christie.

A source said Christie had tried to run from her house on Monday.

Her mother Tracey and grandmother Shirley, who also lives at the house, were there. The source said: "it was over in seconds'' and there was "nothing anyone could do".

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said Christie's family, including father Brian and older sister Heather, were "extremely traumatised".

A post-mortem examination was completed on Tuesday and Christie's body would be returned to her family.

Details of her funeral have not been finalised.

The Herald understands Chand and Christie knew each other from school.
The pair never had a relationship.

Christie finished at ACG Parnell College last year and was in her first year of study at AUT University. Chand is unemployed, according to court documents.

Christie's boyfriend Joseph Burton-Burn took to his Facebook page yesterday to share his feelings.

"All I can do is be glad that I ever met her and look back at the amazing month we had together before she had to go,'' he wrote. "I spent today with Christie's family. We went to visit the house, it was so hard ... we picked some clothes for her to wear [and] sorted out the funeral as well."
