A Whangarei woman has been reunited with her stolen car after spotting the vehicle on a city street and demanding it back.
A man in his 20s was inside the woman's stolen Mazda Capella saloon in Cameron St, Whangarei, about 7pm on Monday when she spied her vehicle and approached the man.
"She went up to the person and screamed at him to get out of her car," Whangarei police sergeant Tai Patrick said.
"The male occupant then gathered up his belongings and casually walked away from the car."
He has not been seen since.
The car had been stolen four days previously from Bank St, Whangarei.
The woman had been reunited with her vehicle but the ignition was damaged after it was hot-wired using a cut-down spoon, Mr Patrick said.
