KEY POINTS:
A Kaikoura surfer who felt a tug on her board while waiting for a wave turned around expecting to see a friend fooling about.
Instead, Olivia Hislop saw a shark, half on top of her board, gnashing its teeth, the Marlborough Express reports.
Ms Hislop was surfing at the Meatworks surf break in Kaikoura on Sunday when she encountered the over-forward shark.
She tugged her board away from the shark, which turned around, smacked her in the forehead with its tail and swam off.
"That's when everyone said it was quite a big one because they could see the size of its tail," Ms Hislop said.
"After it happened, I was a bit dazed and everyone was freaking out."
However, the creature had not had enough yet - when Ms Hislop went to catch another wave, she felt the shark bang against her bare feet, dangling in the water.
After bringing up her foot, she realised the shark had bitten through her leash: "I was expecting to see my toes just dangling."
She found it strange the shark had targeted her again and said it might have had something to do with her being the only one with bare legs.
The double encounter had left Ms Hislop a tad wary of the waters - she said should would not be braving the Meatworks surf break again soon.
