The Australian Navy has approved an electronic shark deterrent after an attack on one of its divers last year.
The Shark Shield company of Adelaide said the Navy accreditation followed seven months of testing after Able Seaman Paul de Gelder was savaged during training in Sydney Harbour in February 2009.
He lost his right hand and right leg.
The basic Shark Shield device weighs about 380g and fits into a person's hand.
