KEY POINTS:
A magnitude 3.0 earthquake centred near Arthur's Pass in the South Island was recorded at 12.38 this afternoon, GNS Science said.
The GeoNet data station at Lower Hutt recorded the location of the shallow surface tremor as with 5km of Arthur's Pass.
