A shallow quake struck the Gisborne area early today.
GNS Science said today the quake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter Scale occurred at 3.53am, 40km north-east of Gisborne at a depth of 7km.
It might have been felt in the Tolaga Bay area, it said.
