Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt has been charged in connection with the car accident that left him with a bruised lung, two fractured vertebrae and wearing a brace.
Police yesterday finished their investigation into the March 31 accident.
The investigation concluded that Mr Shadbolt had not been drinking on the night of the crash, but he had been driving carelessly.
He has been charged with careless use of a motor vehicle and will appear in the Invercargill Traffic Court at a date to be set.
Mr Shadbolt was returning to Invercargill from Frankton with two passengers. They were not injured.
