KEY POINTS:
State Highway 1 has reopened after a crash at Waiouru, in the central North Island, blocked the road for a period this morning.
Police communications said the driver had to be cut from his vehicle by firefighters before being taken by helicopter to Waiouru Army Base Hospital.
He was in a very serious condition and was to be stabilised before being flown to Palmerston North Hospital, police said.
