SH1 near Tirau still closed after crash

State Highway One remains closed between SH27 and SH29 following a fatal motor accident about five kilometres north of Tirau about 12.45pm.

At this stage, police believe a car travelling south crossed the centre line into the path of a truck coming in the opposite direction.

The driver of the car died at the scene. He was the only occupant of the vehicle. The driver and passenger of the truck were uninjured.

It is expected that State Highway One will be closed for several hours, while the Serious Crash Unit investigators inspect the scene.

Detours are in place at the SH27 and SH29 turnoffs.
