State Highway One near Kaikoura has reopened to one lane after a slip this morning.
The slip was reported close to the scene of a fatal truck crash, but the incidents are believed to be unrelated.
Transit New Zealand said large rocks were falling down near the State Highway.
North Canterbury area engineer Barry Stratton said a helicopter has been sent in to sluice the site.
He said both lanes should be open shortly.
It is unlikely the weather was a contributing factor to a fatal crash this morning.
The driver of the truck and trailer unit died after losing control on a tight bend, and plunging into the sea.
Sergeant Tony Yardley said the conditions were fine when the accident occurred around 8.30am.
He said weather conditions were good, but the road was damp from recent rainfall.
Sergeant Yardley said police are now working to recover the truck and trailer unit from the sea.
