KEY POINTS:
A man has lost an arm and one horse is dead after a car and truck pulling a horse float collided near Huntly.
Waikato police spokesman Andrew McAlley said the driver has serious injuries and is in Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
Another person received moderate injuries in the accident.
One of the four horses in the float received moderate injuries and two others were uninjured.
Waikato serious crash unit investigators said initial indications were that a southbound car crossed the centre line and collided with the horsefloat being towed by a northbound truck.
State Highway One was closed for more than three hours this afternoon but has since re-opened.
