KEY POINTS:
SH1 from Blenheim to Kaikoura has opened again, while one lane of the stretch from Kaikoura to Christchurch is expected to open later today.
Kaikoura civil defence officer Mike Kennedy says motorists using the road must drive with extreme caution and only use it at night if its is an emergency.
Mr Kennedy says some people are ignoring road closure signs and one driver became very argumentative, refusing to accept road crew warnings he could not get through. He says the situation almost turned into one of assault - and describes the man's actions as stupid and beyond belief.
Much further south on SH1, a two car crash is causing disruption north of Dunedin. Police say several people are injured and the road at Waikouaiti will be closed for up to two hours.
While detours are in place, they are not suitable for trucks, so truckies will have to wait until the road is open.
Meanwhile in the North Island, a truck has overturned in the Manawatu Gorge.
