There was an element of grooming involved in the case of a 78-year-old Murupara man, who bought ice-cream and lollies for an 8-year-old girl before sexually assaulting her, a High Court judge said.
Colin Moore Barnett was recently sentenced in the High Court at Rotorua to eight years' jail after previously pleading guilty to two charges of unlawful sexual connection on January 22, 2010.
In his sentencing notes released to The Daily Post, Justice Graham Lang said that six days before the offending, Barnett was seen sitting next to the girl on a bench in the township of Murupara. Barnett had his arm around her and the girl was stroking his hair. Police were called.
A police officer arrived at Barnett's home a short time later and found Barnett and the girl having a cup of tea and biscuits. The police took the girl to her home.
Justice Lang said the girl had been prone to wandering the streets and being away from home for extended periods. After police brought the girl home her mother asked her where she had been and she said she had been visiting her "koro". Her mother told her that Barnett was not her koro and that she was not to see him again.
