KEY POINTS:
A 19-year-old man on trial for sexual violating a visiting Australian sportswoman says sex was consensual.
Maia Crawford Rongonui told a Christchurch District Court jury today how he and the 21-year-old tourist had the sexual encounter on a city park.
Rongonui, a shearer from Masterton, denies charges of sexual violation, and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.
He said he met the woman along Manchester Street where she had kissed his friend, and they had walked together to the dark park in the early hours of April 8, 2007 last year.
He said the woman pulled down his pants and they had sex.
They then had to search for her missing keys and after that had sex again but she had "freaked out".
He said she attacked him and he then punched her and kicked her in the head before running off with her chasing him.
The crown alleged that Rongonui attacked the woman in the park and tried to have oral sex with her after offering to show her the way to her backpackers.
Questioned by crown prosecutor Kerryn Beaton, he denied he had made up the story of consensual sex to explain the evidence of his DNA being found on her clothing and in her mouth, and the injuries she received.
The trial is continuing.
